Let’s Design a Haftseen Table

Date: March 18, 2021

With the first day of spring only days away, it’s time to set the traditional haftseen table for Nowruz, or Persian New Year! The ‘haft-seen’ (seven “seens”) is a beautiful spread of at least seven symbolic items that begin with the “s” sound.

I wanted a slightly rustic look this year so I incorporated a lot of woods, browns and golds in my haftseen. Light and bright fresh florals add a nice contrast to the dark colors, and I used crystal vases and dishes to add an additional element of disparity.

My seven “seens” are sabzeh (wheatgrass), sumac, samanu (wheat pudding), senjed (dry lotus tree fruit), serkeh (vinegar), seeb (apple), and seer (garlic). Persians typically add other items to the haftseen, such as colored eggs, coins, a mirror and a ‘book of wisdom’ such as the Quran or even the book of Hafiz. You may also include a personal item that is symbolic to your family. I added a crystal stone and a gold eshgh (love) sign.

No matter how you design your haftseen I wish you and your family a new year full of health, wealth and new possibilities! Eide shoma mobarak (happy new year)!
